The University of Virginia is joining a short list of universities around the country offering a joint degree program in law and medicine. ... The list of UVa students enrolled in the new J.D.-M.D. degree is even shorter.

Austin Sim, a graduating School of Medicine student will become the first and only J.D.-M.D. student at UVa in the fall. In fact, the program likely would not exist without him.
....

Joint medical degree programs have grown about 36 percent in the last decade, according to the American Association of Medical Colleges, with M.D.-Ph.D. programs making up the bulk of the growth. Joint medicine-law degrees are offered at several elite institutions — including Yale University, Stanford University and the University of Chicago — but they are still relatively scarce.
....

Sim’s goal is ultimately to practice medicine, but he said he also wants to act as an adviser for legislators — state or federal — grappling with public health issues. But it’s not just about helping legislators understand health care. Sim said he wants to understand the world legislators work in.
