Cantor’s early departure poses elections dilemma.

Rep. Eric Cantor’s early departure from Congress poses an unusual challenge for state election officials but also offers new and possibly lucrative opportunities for the soon-to-be ex-congressman.

Cantor said Thursday that he would resign his seat for Virginia’s 7th Congressional District effective Aug. 18 and not serve out the four remaining months of his term. He also said he asked Gov. Terry McAuliffe to call a special election, coinciding with Election Day on Nov. 4, to pick his successor.

A special election would allow for the winner to be sworn in right away or soon afterward, and then again in January for a new term.
“We all kind of have to go to the books, because this is the first time that anybody can recall the thought where you would basically have simultaneous elections,” said Charles E. Judd, chairman of the State Board of Elections.
