Shipping traffic has been limited in the Elizabeth River since a freight ship ran " soft aground" late Wednesday, according to the Coast Guard.
The 590-foot ship's pilot reported that it got stuck shortly after 10:30 p.m. near Portsmouth Naval Medical Center, said Petty Officer 1st Class Brandyn Hill. The Hanze Goteborg was heading out from port when it got stuck, he said. The ship is carrying soybeans.
Two tugboats were on the scene and began working to clear the ship, which was only blocking part of the channel. At some point overnight, the tugs were asked to stop and wait until 5 a.m. when the tide would be close to its highest point, expected at 7 a.m. A third tug also was requested to go to the scene.
The ship had not moved by this morning, but may move when high tide comes this morning.
