The county judge of Guadalupe County was arrested Monday at the Hilton Hotel in College Station for possession of marijuana.

It was later discovered that the smell was emanating from the room of 58-year-old Judge Michael Thomas Wiggins. When asked, Wiggins admitted to police that there was marijuana in a duffel bag sitting against the wall of his room.

He then consented to a search of the bag, which yielded a silver grinder, rolling papers and a plastic bag with 20.1 grams of marijuana inside.

Wiggins has served as the Guadalupe county judge since 2007. According to the Guadalupe County website, he also served as a Department of Public Safety sergeant for 30 years before retiring.

Guadalupe County judge to resign after College Station arrest

SEGUIN -- A county judge in South Texas who has been accused of drug possession says he will quit.

Guadalupe County Judge Mike Wiggins says he will turn in his resignation letter March 26. He announced his plans Tuesday during a county commission meeting.

Wiggins had faced public criticism following his Feb. 6 arrest at a hotel in College Station.

The 58-year-old former Texas trooper was attending a conference when a hotel worker noticed the smell of burning marijuana. Security traced the odor to the county judge's room.[/font]

More revenue. Less people going to jail for simple possession. The War on Drugs is the biggest ongoing joke in the world. The US is probably the biggest consumer of illegal drugs in the world. If you don't deal with the reasons behind the use, then the problem will never go away. If the abusers are offered rehab rather than jail time, things may change.

SEGUIN — At his first commissioners court meeting since being charged with pot possession, Guadalupe County Judge Mike Wiggins on Monday apologized for his “poor decisions.”

“I apologize for the pain and suffering and the disappointment, not only that I've brought myself but all the people of Guadalupe County,” Wiggins, 58, said to start the meeting.

The meeting ended with the announcement that Wiggins would take a two-week leave of absence from office.

Following Wiggins to the podium Monday was Guadalupe County Justice of the Peace Todd Friesenhahn, who told Wiggins he should resign in the best interests of the county and citizens.
