The Lege is worried Rick Perry could cut a deal with the Feds and force Texas into the Medicaid expansion. That's why this bill is working its way through. But catch this part:
Rep. Mark Strama, D-Austin, opposed the amendment. He read a list of taxes on insurance, medical products and high-income Americans that will go up under the Affordable Care Act, Obamas signature health care law.
All of these tax increases the state of Texas will pay whether we expand Medicaid or not, Strama said. If we choose not to, we will become far and away the biggest donor state to the federal government.
Rep. Garnet Coleman, D-Houston, noted the state has more than 6 million uninsured residents.
...We understand that theres a problem with uninsureds in Texas, (Jeff Leach, R-Plano, the author of the House bill) said. We dont believe that Obamacare is the answer.
So
this body, which represents 26 million Texans, ought to be involved in that decision.
The US Congress, which represents over 350 million Americans, would say Texas has already been involved in that decision, Representative Leach.
