State: Shut troubled North Forest school district (Houston)--updated 2/9/13

HOUSTON (AP) — The state’s top education official has renewed a demand that a troubled Houston-area school district close and be absorbed by the neighboring Houston school district.

On Thursday, Education Commissioner Michael Williams renewed the order given a year ago by predecessor Robert Scott to close the 6,000-student North Forest school district. Scott had given the district a one-year reprieve.

The order, which takes effect July 1, now goes Texas Education Agency Chief Deputy Lizzette Gonzalez-Reynolds, whom Scott had entrusted with the final decision. The Justice Department also must approve the merger with the Houston district.

The district has a long history of poor academic scores and financial problems and received the state’s lowest academic rating for six years.

North Forest supporters vow to fight closing

Steadfast supporters of North Forest school district vowed Saturday to continue fighting the Texas Education Agency's efforts to merge the district with the neighboring Houston ISD.

"This district will not go away without a fight," North Forest ISD attorney Chris Tritico said. "We have a lot of fight left, and we're not going to stop."

About 60 attended a meeting Saturday in response to TEA Commissioner of Education Michael Williams' recommendation on Thursday to dissolve NFISD due to poor academic performance and low high school completion rates, among other issues.

Leaders of the 6,900-student northeast Houston district said they will fight the decision all the way to the U.S. Department of Justice. District leaders have until Feb. 17 to request a record review be reopened and ask the State Office of Administrative Hearings for an appeal.
