Cargill to idle Plainview meat-processing plant, cut 2,000 jobs

PLAINVIEW — City, county and economic development officials are putting their heads together and attempting to keep a positive attitude after the largest employer here said it would idle its plant Feb. 1.

Cargill Meat Solutions said declining livestock supplies at the plant because of years of drought would force it to shut down operations, putting 2,000 workers out of a job.

The decision was announced Thursday.

John Keating, president of Wichita, Kan.-based Cargill Beef, said the decision evolved after an analysis of the regional cattle supply and processing capacity situation in North America.
