Texas Lt. Gov.: Fund weapons training for teachers

Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst is calling for state-funded, specialized firearms training for teachers and administrators to guard against school shootings.

Dewhurst suggested Friday that school districts would nominate who they want to carry weapons on campus under his plan. The training would be more extensive than what's required for a Texas concealed handgun license and include how to react technically and emotionally in an active shooter situation.

Dewhurst says the state funding needed would depend on the number of participating districts and how many people want training. School districts wouldn't be required to participate.

Dewhurst offered no other details while speaking Friday to the conservative Texas Public Policy Foundation.

1. Oh, they can't afford textbooks, but they can afford this?

2. Lot of good a half trained bunch of teachers

will do armed with pistols, against a skilled marksman using an assault weapon, shotgun, or rifle.

Hire some good security guards, but don't burden the teachers with packing and defending class rooms.

Look what happened to Ron Raygun and all his trained security!

3. We have many well trained young men and women returning from war zones that are already

trained to take out a shooter.

I am worried that having lots of guns on campus sends out a message to come on in, it is acceptable, we are ready for you. What a WRONG message that would send.

Teachers are not trained to contain and control an insurrection; like 9/11.

4. Our district has sworn officers. That's good.

Teachers carrying guns? Disaster.
