El Paso City Council extends emergency ordinance to July 8, keeps evictions on hold
The El Paso City Council on Monday extended the local emergency ordinance that protects tenants from being evicted during the coronavirus crisis, although the state's highest civil court has allowed eviction hearings to resume.
First issued in March, the local ordinance has been extended four times and was set to expire June 10. It will now be in effect through July 8 and could be extended another 30 days by a council vote.
Though the Texas Supreme Court lifted its March 19 moratorium on eviction hearings in late May, El Paso's justice of the peace courts ordered local hearings not to be held until June 22.
That justice of the peace court order also bars eviction citations from being issued before June 15 unless there is an imminent threat to health and safety.
