Bexar County GOP chair refuses to resign for racist George Floyd conspiracy theory post despite call

Bexar County GOP chair refuses to resign for racist George Floyd conspiracy theory post despite calls from her own party

by Patrick Svitek, Texas Tribune

Gov. Greg Abbott and other top Texas Republicans are calling for the resignation of the GOP chair in one of the state's biggest counties after she floated a conspiracy theory about the death of George Floyd. The chairwoman, Bexar County's Cynthia Brehm, is refusing to step down.

In a since-deleted Facebook post from this week, Brehm asked for her friends' thoughts on a theory that Floyd's death was a "staged event," apparently to gin up opposition to President Donald Trump. There is no evidence to support that claim; Floyd, a black Minnesota man, died last week after a white police officer kneeled on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

"These comments are disgusting and have no place in the Republican Party or in public discourse," Abbott spokesman John Wittman said in a statement Thursday morning. "Cynthia Brehm should immediately resign her position as Chair of the Bexar County Republican Party."

Brehm did not respond to request for comment for this story but told Spectrum News that she would not resign. She told the TV station that she did not agree with the post and rebuffed the cast of GOP leaders calling for her to step down, saying they "do a lot of things, too, that I don’t agree with but I don’t ask for their resignation."

No provisions to vote her out which is why they called for her resignation instead.

She's in a runoff

This is just underhanded campaigning by the GOP for her opponent. They know she won't resign and they know the ballot can't be changed because they've already been mailed overseas.

If she wasn't on the ballot, they would have never called for her resignation.

Abbott et al, all know this.....This is just their way of endorsing her opponent.

I forgot that the primary runoffs are coming soon and that the position would be on the ballot. I was fortunate to remember what I did since Travis county had a similar issue a couple years ago.. My brain can get things in gear still, but it doesn't mean that it's the correct gear.

Heaven help us!!

Robert Morrow
Chairman of the Republican Party of
Travis County (Austin), Texas
In office
June 13, 2016 – August 19, 2016 (Quite a tenure...LOL)

Republican voters are stupid. This is my SBOE. You know how he got into a runoff? It's his freakin gender...I poured over election results precinct by precinct...and whenever the candidate was a white male, they won.

To be fair, with Democrats, whenever the candidate had a Latina name, they won. (We lost good precinct chairs because of this)

We will see what happens in the runoff with Brehm and Morrow.

Ballots have already been mailed overseas.

Abbott et al are asking her to resign because it would not be ethical for them to endorse her opponent.

8. Kaelin post suggesting Floyd death was staged ends in Gov. Greg Abbott calling for his resignation

Former Nueces Co. Sheriff and current Nueces County Republican Party Chairman Jim Kaelin is the second South Texas GOP Party chairperson to incur the ire of Gov. Greg Abbott for posts related to George Floyd's death.

Kaelin, along with Bexar County GOP Chairwoman Cynthia Brehm, shared identically worded posts proposing Floyd's death while in custody of Minneapolis (Minn.) Police on May 21 was staged.

"I think there is at the very least the 'possibility,' that this was a filmed public execution of a black man by a white cop, with the purpose of creating racial tensions and driving a wedge in the growing group of anti deep state sentiment from comon (sic) people, that have already been psychologically traumatized by Covid 19 (sic) fears," the lengthy post reads at one point.
