Bexar County now has 313 coronavirus cases as outbreak at nursing home adds 59

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg confirmed that 59 more residents of the Southeast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center have now tested positive for COVID-19. He also announced that Bexar County now has 254 confirmed cases of coronavirus but no new deaths. The news about the 59 nursing home cases came in after the count for the day, Nirenberg said. In total there are now 313 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the county.

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg plans to extend the city’s stay-at-home order through the end of April as the numbers of COVID-19 cases increase and the toll on the city’s budget becomes clear. The City Council is expected to vote to extend the order at its April 9 meeting. Nirenberg’s order would otherwise expire the next day.

Deputy working at the Bexar County jail tests positive for COVID-19: A deputy working at the Bexar County jail has tested positive for COVID-19, officials said Thursday. The case appears to be a result of community spread, according to a Bexar County Sheriff's Office spokesperson. The deputy, a 12-year veteran who oversees inmates at the Adult Detention Center, was asymptomatic while at work on Sunday. On Monday, the deputy reported feeling sick with symptoms consistent with nasal allergies. The deputy received positive test results for COVID-19 on Wednesday from University Hospital. The deputy will remain on leave until the conditions have fully subsided, officials said. The deputy did not have any contact with the public prior to being placed on administrative leave, officials said. The individual's normal job duties include overseeing a cell where inmates are housed. No inmates at the jail have the virus, officials said Thursday. The Texas Commission on Jail Standards was notified of the deputy testing positive.

San Antonio puts road repairs and development incentives on hold as coronavirus crisis hits budget: San Antonio City Manager Erik Walsh has paused more than $80 million in spending on city programs, including road repairs and economic development incentives, as the city sees a budget shortfall spurred by the COVID-19 crisis. City budget officials now project local economic fallout from the pandemic could result in an $82 million cut to its $1.27 billion operating budget — which pays for services such as police and fire protection, streets and infrastructure and parks. The deepest cut is expected to be $50 million in street maintenance projects, Deputy City Manager María Villagómez told City Council members Thursday.
