Texas Health Presbyterian incorrectly billed Medicare more than $10 million, audit finds
Texas Health Presbyterian in Dallas incorrectly billed Medicare more than $10 million in a two-year period, according to audit findings released Friday by the U.S. Health and Human Services Department.
The departments Office of Inspector General is recommending that the hospital pay back $10.6 million to Medicare. The billing errors were discovered in an examination of 100 randomly selected inpatient and outpatient bills from 2016 and 2017.
In its report, the inspector general said the hospital failed to comply with billing requirements on 41 claims it examined, resulting in billing errors totaling more than $1 million. Based on that sample, the government estimated Presbyterian would have overbilled by more than $10 million during the audit period.
The errors range from incorrect billing codes to inpatient services that should have been billed at lower outpatient rates.
