Texas Democrats ask judge to order release of secret recording of House Speaker within 3 days
AUSTIN -- Lawyers for the Texas Democratic Party on Tuesday asked a Travis County judge to force political activist Michael Quinn Sullivan to produce within three days an audio recording of the secret meeting between him and House Speaker Dennis Bonnen and one of his lieutenants.
The request by Democrats came on the same day that the Texas Rangers asked House members for more details on the scandal that rocked Texas politics this summer.
The Democrats are suing political activist Sullivan for creating an unregistered political action committee during the meeting.
Sullivan has alleged Bonnen and Rep. Dustin Burrows of Lubbock offered writers for his website, Texas Scorecard, press credentials during the next legislative session if Sullivan and his affiliated political action group, Empower Texans, refrained from criticizing this year's legislative session and went after only a group of 10 House Republicans in next year's primary elections. Bonnen and Burrows have denied those allegations, but Sullivan secretly recorded the meeting and has played the audio for Republican lawmakers, political operatives and activists, who have said it confirms Sullivan's account.
