Bickerstaff, go-to lawyer for redstricting, election law, dies in Austin

Steve Bickerstaff, a former University of Texas law professor and an election law expert who helped guide state and local governments through the legal pitfalls surrounding redistricting and voting rights issues, died Friday in Austin, his law firm announced.

Bickerstaff, 73, got his law degree from UT in 1975 and served as the parliamentarian for the Texas Senate from 1974-76.

He moved on to the Texas attorney general’s office, serving as chief of the State and County Affairs Division before leaving to form a law firm with another division chief at the agency, Bob Heath.

“Steve was the driving force in founding the firm and probably the best lawyer I have ever known,” Heath said in a written announcement of Bickerstaff’s death by the firm, now known as Bickerstaff Heath Delgado Acosta.
