Valero case: Attorney General Ken Paxton's efforts vs. refinery under watch
PORT ARTHUR -- An environmentalist whos among those pressing a lawsuit against Valero Port Arthur Refinery says hes hopeful the Texas attorney general will press the case with vigor.
Luke Metzger of Environment Texas and others announced May 22 theyd sue the local refinery, one of Americas largest, over more than 600 violations they say Valero has made since 2014. The complaints include exceeding permitted emissions as well as flaring violations. Valero violated both state and federal law, the complaint contends.
After Metzgers group, the Sierra Club and Port Arthur Community Action Network said theyd sue, the Texas Attorney Generals Office stepped forward last week to file a complaint against Valero in District Court in Travis County.
Their complaint very closely follows what we filed, Metzer said Tuesday. Same violations. Its a strong complaint.
