Construction begins on $600 million West Texas wind farm

Just south of Midland, straddling Upton and Crockett counties, a massive wind farm is beginning to take shape.

The High Lonesome project will be the largest wind farm in the world for Italian company Enel Green Power. When completed by the end of the year, the 450 megawatt project represents a $600 million investment and, once fully operational, will generate about 1.7 terawatt hours annually.

Asked about locating this wind farm in the heart of not just Texas oil-producing country but American oil-producing country, Chris Hickey, business development director with Enel Green Power North America, said in an email that the oil and gas industry has been accepting of renewable energy.

"In fact, recent reports confirm that both Exxon and Shell have secured renewable power purchase agreements to power their drilling operations in Texas," he said. "Wind and other renewable energy resources have helped diversify the state's energy supply, helping to increase resiliency and maintain lower energy prices. Building a wind farm of this size can be a challenge, but we are well experienced, having recently built 620 MW worth of wind projects in 2018."
