Is Beto like Bernie? Liberal views could thwart O'Rourke's pursuit of Ted Cruz GOP voters, or not

Beto O'Rourke is crisscrossing the state urging voters to make Texas the national leader in tackling an array of difficult issues, including immigration, criminal justice, health care and education.

But his opponent, Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, says if you cut through O'Rourke's powerful speeches and soaring rhetoric, his ideas are to the left of most Texans.

"My opponent, Congressman Beto O'Rourke, is running hard, hard left," Cruz said in Arlington Tuesday. "He's running like Bernie Sanders."

O'Rourke's politics are closer to those of Sanders, the independent Vermont senator and 2016 presidential contender, than Cruz, and for that matter, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott or any other Texas Republican.
