Entities join Pawnee ISD in protest against proposed dump

PAWNEE – Concerns are mounting as Pawnee residents fight to stop an oilfield waste disposal site from going in just 1.6 miles from their school.

On Sunday, July 29, 153 people gathered in the school cafeteria for an update on the project proposed by Republic Services.

“We only have 166 people who live in Pawnee according to the U.S. census,” said Floyd Wolff, one of the residents mounting this resistance. “There is a lot of interest in this now.”

For Wolff, this is personal as he is fighting to help a community that saw him through rough times in his life.

The disposal site will also contain waste that is radioactive. The site is in the watershed for Lake Corpus Christi.
