Smithville teacher accused of stealing up to $30,000 from cheerleaders

A Smithville Junior High School teacher has been accused of stealing between $2,500 to $30,000 from the school’s cheerleading fund, according to police.

Alicia Turnley, the school’s cheerleading sponsor, was arrested May 18 after admitting to investigators she took at least $2,500 from the cheerleading fund, police said in a statement.

“The Smithville Police Department is working closely with the superintendent’s office to conduct an audit of financial records to determine an aggregate amount of money taken by Turnley,” the statement said. “Based on the final amount the charges could possibly be enhanced.”

The Smithville school district said in a statement that it was conducting a “full and thorough internal audit of activity funds.”
