Democrats vying for Rep. Sam Johnson's seat in Collin County say they can turn red District 3 blue
WASHINGTON -- The two Democrats in Tuesdays runoff say they can turn the 3rd Congressional District blue, despite the fact that the district encompassing much of Collin County has been solidly red for decades.
Voters will decide whether they want Lorie Burch or Sam Johnson, two Plano-based attorneys, to face state Sen. Van Taylor in the November election. Taylor is a well-known conservative name in the district and has a huge cash advantage.
Plano Rep. Sam Johnson, who announced in January that he would retire at the end of his term, has served in the U.S. House since 1991. Burch and Johnson see the open seat as an opportunity for a Democrat to take over.
Burch nearly avoided a runoff in the March primary, winning 49.6 percent of the vote against her three opponents. Meanwhile, Johnson is the underdog for the Democratic slot after receiving 28.7 percent of the primary vote.

For clarification purposes, one of the Democratic candidates has the same name as the Republican representative who is retiring.
