Sen. Bernie Sanders and CNN's Jake Tapper cover lots of political ground in SXSW 2018 talk

In a Friday afternoon on the first day of South by Southwest 2018, CNN’s Jake Tapper and independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders had time to stretch out in front of a live audience.

Addressing a over-full Ballroom D at the Austin Convention Center on Friday afternoon, Sanders and Tapper sparred and covered a wide range of political issues that largely focused on Sanders’ frustrations with President Donald Trump and his efforts to get more citizens voting, running for office and participating in the electoral process.

Sanders came out to a standing ovation and stated at the outset that he wanted to go beyond the 10-12 minutes he and Tapper usually have to discuss issues on the CNN show “State of the Union.”

“We don't talk about the most important issues facing the working people of this country: the collapse of the middle class, wealth inequality, the country’s move to an oligarchy, the Koch brothers. Those issue we often don't talk about on television and I want to do that today,” Sanders said.

One of the outdoor cats bit me and clamped down on the top of my wrist on Wednesday night. My hand hurt on Thursday, but on Friday it had swollen between the two bite marks and moved up my right arm about three inches. I had difficulty picking up just a few pounds so it was a struggle getting scrubs pressed for my brother to wear this weekend.

The good news is that I have the apartment to myself tomorrow night so I plan on indulging myself if I don't end up in the ER.

stopped. I also started on an antibiotic and ice packs to reduce the swelling. If it continues to spread then I'll get to an ER about 15 miles away. It feels like I sprained my arm and its the same arm that I broke in 2010.

Speaking to a packed auditorium that seats 2,700 at Trinity, Sanders eventually got around to the topic of student debt. He recalled a recent campaign stop in Wisconsin where a teacher told him tearfully that she had to inform her daughter she couldn’t afford to send her to college.

“All over this country we have bright working-class kids who have the ability to go to college but don’t have the income,” Sanders said. “Our job is to understand that in a highly competitive global economy, we must make public colleges and universities tuition-free.”

Progressive activist and former Agriculture Commissioner Jim Hightower, a close observer of Treviño’s campaign, marveled at his instincts during the past couple of months.

“Rick is about as grassy as you can get,” Hightower said. “He doesn’t need a GPS to find the grass roots, he is grass roots. And as he showed in that election, he went to places that the other candidates didn’t even know existed.”

Rick Treviño (congressional candidate - CD 23) introduced Bernie. Rick is in run-off with Gina Ortiz Jones. He was a long shot candidate, who ran his campaign with about $10,000.
