Fort Worth -- Texas educators face a political choice in next months primaries: Help their last remaining Republican allies fend off challenges from the right, or support a burgeoning movement of new Democratic candidates?
In bright red Texas, educators have often thrown their support behind Republicans who oppose their own party on vouchers and school choice.
Both the left and right agree its those Republicans, including retiring House Speaker Joe Straus, who for years have stopped conservatives education agenda in GOP-controlled Austin.
But a wave of liberal activism this year, including a host of educator candidates, is drawing many of them to Democratic primaries where voters are already turning out in force in Texas.

(938 posts)I don't see how there is any reasonable Republican choice for teachers. Democrats are the only group of size taking a stand for public education. From what I can tell, Republicans represent only a scale of how much against public education they stand.

(22,264 posts)Milder is co-founder of Friends of Texas Public Schools. He is adamantly opposed to vouchers and "school choice"
He will probably campaign with Mike Collier, the Democratic nominee.

(25,383 posts)I belong to a group, Texans for Public Education. They are non-partisan, but majority are Republican. They agreed to block vote for public ed. (I couldn't cuz I signed a zillion D petitions and was on the ballot). Anyway, they are now energized to vote for Collier with Milder leading the way!

(22,264 posts)Tarrant County Democratic Woman's Club monthly meeting; we had approximately 200 attendees.
This was his first event post-primary, I could not believe he said yes. It was an honor to introduce him.

He did this entire speech with no notes and no stumbles, with his characteristic good humor.
He plans to spend a lot of time in Tarrant County. He will be appearing with Kim Olson here on March 24 at an event sponsored by Texas Democratic Women of Rural North Texas and Retired Members of the Machinists and Aerospace Workers Union.
