(5,954 posts)I also seem to remember a Democrat named BILL CLINTON being Governor of Arkansas until 1992, a high profile Senator from Tennessee named Al Gore, and a Democratic Governor of Kentucky named Steve Beshear.
This myth of the South being an impenetrable Republican fortress is bullshit. "Deep Red" usually means "by a margin of 5%." The pendulum swung one way, it can swing back just as easily. They used to say Virginia was an impenetrable Republican fortress, and when it went Blue last month, the Faux Noise pundits were whistling past the graveyard by saying "oh, that's no big deal. Virginia is a BLUE STATE now. Nothin' to worry about."
Republican bluster is very thin at the moment. They're basically a big BLOW FISH at the moment, trying to look bigger than they are. It won't last long.

Sigh.
It wasn't perfect, but it certainly wasn't the shithole Texas has been for a while.

(43,191 posts)their ideas are going to seem more refreshing and intense than usual because of the repression they replace. That could lead to long term dominance.

(112,252 posts)Thus far, White has the largest campaign war chest ($220K) on the Democratic side. However, he isn't even in the ballpark compared to what Abbott has stashed back ($43M).

(37,648 posts)I'm old enough to be his mother. I'm not in the market. And being cute is helpful not just in life, but also to win elections.
He IS a cutie pie. (Notice to all men: Noting that someone is attractive does NOT mean they "want" you, or anything more than they think you're cute. A LOT of people are cute.)

(8,322 posts)-- He has no political experience whatsoever. His only claim to fame is that he was the son of a former governor (Mark White).
-- He's personally anti-choice (by Wendy Davis' description of him).
-- And he's an elder in the Presbyterian church (extremely conservative).
The facts: White, 45, is an elder at Christ the King Presbyterian Church in Houston, a conservative congregation that is a member of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA).
[...]
"The PCA, like other evangelical, conservative, orthodox, and traditional Christians from many denominations, believes that from creation God ordained the marriage covenant to be a bond only between one man and one woman. That understanding is what the Church has always believed, taught, and confessed. It is based upon the teachings of the Holy Scriptures and is clearly stated in the doctrinal standards of the PCA."
On homosexuality, the PCA holds a hard-line position.
"Given the serious threat that sexual perversion generally, and homosexuality in particular, represents to young people in our society, the congregations of PCA are encouraged to study the Scriptures, to pray for God's mercy and truth to triumph in the lives of people involved or affected by homosexuality" . . . and encourage church leaders "to warn parents of the homosexual agenda being promoted through the agency of government schools."
"God has plainly spoken of homosexuality in his Word, denouncing both the act and the desire as a sin, condemning this perversion as unnatural, a degrading passion, an indecent act, an error, an abomination, and hence worthy of death," a scriptural reference that is excerpted in the PCA's position on the "homosexual agenda" from 1999.

White said he sees no divergence between his church's polity and how he would govern if elected governor.
This guy's either bullshitting the Texas Democratic primary voters or he's bullshitting the congregants of his church. Whichever it happens to be, I'm not voting for him.
