Leaders in three counties remain strong in opposition to proposed oil field waste landfill

McMULLEN COUNTY – Officials in three counties continue to voice their opposition to a planned oil field waste landfill site two miles north of Tilden along state Highway 16. The landfill, which would accommodate waste from oil and natural gas drilling, is within the floodplain of the Salt Branch Creek here.

The landfill site is owned by San Antonio-based Petro Waste Environmental (PWE), whose project has been a continuing topic of discussion for the Three Rivers City Council and City Attorney Roxanne Pais Cotroneo, who addressed the topic during a closed session at the Oct. 10 council meeting.

Mayor Sammy Garcia of Three Rivers – along with County Judges Jim Teal, Jim Huff and Stephanie Moreno of McMullen, Live Oak and Bee counties, respectively – are protesting PWE’s permit application with the Texas Railroad Commission. A contested case hearing on the application started Monday in Austin and runs through Friday.

Garcia said after the council meeting that his city’s continued objection to the facility rests entirely with its location because the creek feeds into the Choke Canyon Reservoir – the main water supply for Three Rivers and other cities including Beeville and Corpus Christi.
