GOP lawmaker to file free-speech lawsuit against Texas Southern University over canceled speech
HOUSTON -- What started as a squabble over a canceled speech at Texas Southern University has now turned into a full-blown war, with a free-speech lawsuit in the works and school leaders blaming each other for a public relations snafu.
On Monday, Rep. Briscoe Cain told The Dallas Morning News he plans to file a lawsuit against the Houston-based historically black university, alleging his First Amendment rights were violated when he was kept from speaking to students last week. He said the decision to cancel his speech was made because of his political views, a contention the university has denied.
"In the last few days the truth has begun to be made evident: the TSU administration shut me down because I'm a conservative," Cain told The News on Monday. "This kind of viewpoint discrimination must not be tolerated."
Cain will bring on Houston attorney Jerad Najvar for the case, he said. Both TSU and its president, Austin Lane, will be named as defendants.
