Barges are not coming to Port Arthur

Port Arthur residents looking for temporary shelter are still in limbo, after barges that Mayor Derrick Freeman announced would house up to 600 displaced people failed Coast Guard inspections.

The barges, which were located in Houma, Louisiana, had broken guardrails and "all kinds of safety violations," Jefferson County Judge Jeff Branick said Thursday.

Port Arthur spokeswoman Risa Carpenter said the city is "working with all of our local, federal and state partners trying to find the most agreeable solutions," but said she couldn't provide details.

Branick said he was told FEMA is now considering two locations in Port Arthur for temporary housing, but said the process is "fluid" and could change.
