In response to Harvey, Houston ISD to provide 3 free meals per day for all students this school year

The Houston Independent School District announced on Wednesday that it had received approval from the United States Department of Agriculture and the Texas Department of Agriculture to waive the required application process for the National School Lunch/Breakfast Program.

"All HISD students will eat all school meals for free during the 2017-2018 school year," the district said in a release Wednesday morning. Families still need to apply for this waiver though.

The impact of Hurricane Harvey and its aftermath put this plan into motion. This takes care of one more thing for families and students who have much work ahead of them over the next few months.

"The waiver will allow all HISD students to receive free lunch for the school year. Despite the federal waiver, HISD is still asking parents and guardians to complete and return the application," the district added.

What a good thing to do. If similar to here, waiver applications go in enrollment packets at the start of the school year, or can be picked up at board offices and schools in the district.

We're pulling for you, Texas. ALL of you.
