WASHINGTON -- Vice President Mike Pence is heading for Texas on Thursday to survey Hurricane Harvey's destruction and meet with storm survivors.
Pence made the announcement during a Wednesday night appearance in West Virginia.
He'll visit Corpus Christi, two days after President Donald Trump and first lady Melania traveled there. The Trumps also flew to Austin, where they and cabinet members met with federal, state and local officials -- but no displaced Texans.
Pence, notably, is expected to meet with people affected by the storm.
According to the White House, he will travel with second lady Karen Pence and several Cabinet members, including Energy Secretary Rick Perry, the former Texas governor.

(10,879 posts)Oh yes, Daddy, those poor people need Jesus more than anything else.
He will provide through us. Unless they are Jews, Muslims, or Gays, of course.

(112,252 posts)The school district in Wharton cancelled classes until after Labor Day. There hasn't been any mail service by the post office. The local grocery store was completely out of milk, bread, eggs and almost out of meat--it looked like the pictures of grocery stores in Russia (maybe that was Trump's plan?). Gasoline is getting difficult to find. Trash has not been picked up in nearly a week. Most businesses are still shut down.
The river in Wharton crested tonight at about 11.5 feet beyond flood stage and about one-third of the town had to relocate to higher ground. I'm still luckier than most with the most significant impact being the loss of electricity for about four hours on the night the hurricane made landfall.
However, if Pence isn't bringing some barbecue or something good to eat, then I don't want to see him.

(205,521 posts)But I agree with you, unless Pence has something to contribute other than empty words, he might as well stay home. I talked with my brother today - you'll remember he went to school in San Marcos - and he gave me a geography lesson. And told me about visiting Houston - said it was enormous - went on forever.
At least you have power. That was the toughest part of making it through Irene here - at least where I am. But other people lost so much more. I visited where I spent summers in Vermont and actual buildings had just washed away.
Somebody needs to give Pence a clue - and tell him to bring supplies. It's going to be a long haul - but I'm hoping the worst is over. Hang in there - and thanks for checking in and keeping us informed!
