Cost of housing Harvey evacuees in Dallas shelters: $100,000 a day

About 1,000 Hurricane Harvey evacuees were spread among Dallas' four shelters Wednesday afternoon — far fewer than the 6,000 people Dallas is prepared to take in.

But more are expected to arrive in the coming days as people are able to get out of flooded Southeast Texas cities. City officials said late Wednesday they'd been told people could be bused in from Galveston through the night, and others may be arriving from rain-soaked Beaumont.

As of Wednesday evening, though, state emergency officials had not told Dallas when — or if — to expect evacuees from Houston.

Earlier in the afternoon, the downtown "mega-shelter" at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, a space with enough cots to sleep 5,000, was hosting about 365 people.
