Austin High principal in El Paso disliked 'informants,' administrator says

Former Austin High School Principal John Tanner wanted to get rid of "informants" suspected of talking to the FBI about wrongdoing on campus, an ex-assistant principal said Thursday in federal court.

Former Austin Assistant Principal Michael Salcido testified about the hostile environment at the campus that was trying to raise attendance rates by any means necessary.

"I specifically told them (attendance clerks) change the attendance from 'unexcused' to 'in school' because of directives by Dr. Tanner," Salcido said. "He said, 'We need to do what we need to do to get this attendance rate up.' "

Salcido was the only member of the school's top administration not charged in an El Paso Independent School District scheme to game federal accountability standards.
