Royce West, Don Huffines tangle during Senate debate on Dallas County Schools before agreeing to let voters decide agency's fate
AUSTIN Tempers flared between two Dallas state senators Thursday before they agreed to let the voters decide the fate of a troubled county school bus system.
The Senate unanimously voted for a bill that calls for a November election to let voters decide whether to abolish bus operator Dallas County Schools.
Republican Sen. Don Huffines of Dallas sponsored the original bill that would have eliminated what he called "rogue and unnecessary bureaucracy." The beleaguered Dallas County Schools has faced numerous controversies over questionable finances, business dealings and personnel.
Huffines said despite leadership changes at the system, nothing can justify its continued existence.
