TEA reviewing allegations of academic wrongdoing at Marlin ISD
The Texas Education Agency is looking into allegations that students may have been improperly awarded course credit throughout the past school year at Marlin Independent School District, a district that has failed state academic accountability ratings for five years in a row and faces the possibility of closure if it fails again.
Marlin High School assistant principal Roshon Jackson filed a complaint with the TEA March 29, involving Superintendent Michael Seabolt and Special Education Director Marti Turner, on behalf of multiple students. Jackson filed the complaint six days after she was placed on administrative leave for unclear reasons.
Jackson asked the TEA to look into whether Marlin ISD ensured implementation of students’ individualized education programs while they were enrolled at the district’s Success Academy between March 29, 2016, and March 29, 2017, according to a TEA letter sent to the district April 24.
Jackson also asked the TEA to investigate whether the district ensured that special education students attending the academy met all applicable graduation requirements during the same time frame, the letter states.
