(CBS/AP) GOLIAD, Texas - Authorities say a pickup truck has crashed in South Texas, killing 11 people in the vehicle and injuring 12. All 23 passengers were in the same Ford F-250 truck, according to officials.

Louann Presas, a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, says the crash occurred about 7 p.m. CDT Sunday near Berclair when the truck ran off the highway and crashed into some trees. The unincorporated community is about 100 miles southeast of San Antonio.

"The truck left the roadway and struck two very large trees," Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Gerald Bryant told CBS affiliate KENS in San Antonio.

According to Bryant, a total of 23 people of "a variety of ages," including some children, were in the vehicle. The victims have not yet been identified, he said.

My prayers to the families of these victims.

The story at mysoutex.com says that it looks like a flat tire and there was no indication that they were driving over the speed limit. They were all in the same vehicle and that's why there is so much loss of life and injury.

What a horrible accident.

on that highway is 70, unless they were in a slower zone if they were actually In Berclair.

The last time I drove that portion of Hwy 59 was about a year ago. The road was in good shape, but maybe it has deteriorated with all the heavy trucking down in South Texas due to the Eagle Ford Shale fracking.

This is so sad.

This was human smuggling. People coming into the country illegally and at the mercy of the "coyotes". People who will smuggle undocumented immigrants into this country illegally for a profit. And as the story says in order to maximize profits they pack them in.

It is not uncommon for human traffickers to try to maximize profits by over-loading vehicles with illegal immigrants as they head north from the Texas-Mexico border. In April, nine Mexican immigrants died near the border when the teenage driver of their van crashed after fleeing Border Patrol. There were 18 people in that minivan.

It was also confirmed that the occupants of the vehicle were from Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala and an investigation was begun by ICE to determine if they were smuggled into the country.

(BTW, I don't know why the story has McAllen listed since that is nearly 150 miles away from the site of the accident).
