Taft police chief indicted on oppression charge

A San Patricio County grand jury indicted Taft Police Chief Klaus "Bill" Mansion of a charge related to accusations he told a homeless man to leave town or face jail.

Klaus is charged with official oppression, a misdemeanor.

The indictment states Klaus "then and there, knowing his conduct was unlawful, intentionally deny or impede Devon Gary Armstrong in the exercise or enjoyment of a right, to-wit: freedom of movement, and the defendant was then and there acting under color of his office as a public servant, namely, Chief of Police of Taft, Texas."

Mansion replaced John Landreth last year after Landreth resigned from the post in April. About the same time, City Manager Ray De Los Santos Jr. also resigned.
