Union bill advances on party-line vote

The Texas Senate gave final approval Thursday to legislation that would end payroll deductions for state and local public employee union members, though police, firefighters and emergency medical workers would be exempt.

Senate Bill 13 was sent to the House on a 20-11, party-line vote.

State Sen. Kirk Watson, D-Austin, said SB 13 was an attempt by Republican senators to curb unions they oppose. “Sometimes we don’t really like what others say and with whom they associate, but that’s their right,” he said.

State Sen. Royce West, D-Dallas, said the dues collection cost very little but provided a convenience for teachers, jailers and child protection workers.
