Normangee police chief arrested after standoff
Normangee Police Chief Charles Herford remained jailed late Wednesday following an early-morning standoff that lasted 4 1/2 hours, during which he communicated with officers over police radio.
Herford, 38, was charged with deadly conduct and evading deputies in his car, though it remained unclear late Wednesday whether he was in his personal vehicle or a city patrol unit.
The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation into the incident that started at 1:55 a.m. with a dispatcher answering a 911 call from Herford's wife from their home on Fourth Street before the call was disconnected. Once the dispatcher called back, she thought she heard a gunshot, officials said, adding that the couple's children were inside the house at the time. No one was injured.
Sheriff's deputies en route to the scene located Herford nearby in his vehicle and tried to pull him over, but he refused to stop, according to Sgt. Jimmy Morgan, spokesman for the Bryan office of the Department of Public Safety.
