Spring Break at South Padre Island shaping up to be busiest in several years

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — On a sunny afternoon at the start of what is shaping up to be the busiest week of the busiest Spring Break in years, the beach outside Clayton’s Beach Bar was the place to be.

The beach was free and the lines of rosy shoulders continued out to the streets. Several thousand scantily clad partygoers danced, or imitated something resembling a dance, while others clumsily partook in drinking games involving ping pong balls and bong funnels.

Carissa Meyer, a 21-year-old therapeutic recreation major from Wisconsin, together with a group of four other girls drove 24 hours straight to the island.

“It was worth the drive,” the bikini-clad Meyer said, donning heart-shaped sunglasses. “This is my second time down here, and I had to come back.”
