El Paso police investigate large-scale mailbox thefts
El Paso police detectives and postal inspectors have identified more than 30 victims of a large-scale mail theft scheme from U.S. Postal Service mailboxes, police said Friday.
Thieves targeted money orders in mail stolen from blue U.S. Postal Service drop-off boxes in various parts of the city from March 2016 through December, police spokesman Sgt. Enrique Carrillo said at a news briefing.
"To date, weve identified at least 30 victims and we have reason to believe there could be numerous more victims," said Carrillo, adding that the total amount of money stolen is estimated to be in the thousands.
Police officials would not say whether the ongoing mail-theft investigation is linked to the controversial arrest of an undocumented transgender woman from Mexico arrested last month by U.S. Border Patrol agents at the El Paso County Courthouse after she went to a protective-order hearing in a domestic violence case.
