Perry will be just 15 heartbeats from presidency
AUSTIN Rick Perry had to jump through a lot of oops to get picked for a post in President-elect Donald Trumps cabinet.
Perry, the longest serving governor in Texas history, was chosen last week to be the next secretary of energy. The appointment, subject to confirmation by the U.S. after the new president is sworn in Jan. 20, would appear to make sense on both political and geographic grounds.
The 66-year-old Texan has solid conservative Republican credentials, and he ran the nations most energy-productive state from late in 2000 when George W. Bush left Austin to become president until his third full term ended in January 2015.
But recall that when Perry himself first sought the presidency during the 2012 cycle, he stumbled badly during a nationally televised debate when he boasted that hed streamline the federal government by abolishing three cabinet agencies and then given multiple chances just could not the name of the third one.
