'San Antonio Four' cleared on all charges by Texas appeals court

AUSTIN — The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals today ruled in favor the "San Antonio Four," women who have fought to clear their names after being convicted of sexually assaulting two young girls in the 1990s.

“They are innocent. And they are exonerated,” said the plurality opinion by Judge David Newell, joined by two other judges on the court. Read the full ruling here.

Elizabeth Ramirez, Cassandra Rivera, Kristie Mayhugh and Anna Vasquez were accused in 1994 of sexually assaulting Ramirez’s young nieces.

Seven of the nine judges heard the case. All agreed that the women should get a new trial, and five said the women are actually innocent, a move that paves the way for them to seek state compensation for their imprisonment.
