Man flings himself from 3rd floor inside Collin County courthouse after getting 5 years for assault

A man jumped from the third floor inside the Collin County courthouse after he was sentenced to five years in prison Wednesday, officials say.

After the man was sentenced in 401st District Court, he left the McKinney courtroom and struggled with a bailiff in the hallway, Capt. Jim Moody, a sheriff's office spokesman, said. He had been convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Officers tried to restrain him, but he was able to get over a railing and jumped to the ground floor.

The man was conscious before he was taken by ambulance to McKinney Medical Center, Collin County Sheriff's Lt. Chris Havey said. On Friday, Havey said his condition was stable.
