An Internal Revenue Service submission processing center south of downtown Austin is slated for closure, a move the union representing Treasury Department workers says could leave about 2,400 Central Texas employees without jobs.
The Southeast Austin facility, which processes paper tax returns, will shut down in 2024, the IRS said in a written statement. Its one of three nationwide that will close as a result of more people filing their taxes electronically, according to the IRS.
The other offices are in Covington, Ky., and Fresno, Calif. The Kentucky center, which the union says has 1,800 employees, is set to close in 2019, followed by the California facility, which reportedly has 3,000 workers, in 2021.
This is distressing news for our members, many of whom have been loyal IRS employees for years, National Treasury Employees Union President Tony Reardon said in a written statement. NTEU will aggressively pursue all available measures to avoid or mitigate the impact of these closings on affected employees in these three locations. Their well-being is our top priority. We want to make sure our members are treated fairly and that all steps are taken to avoid actions that may harm them.

(17,086 posts)Shutdown is going to hurt a town like Covington a lot more than Austin.

(11,119 posts)The Covington, KY facility has 3 years, the Fresno facility has 5 years and Austin has 8 years. Also, these service centers aren't shutting down completely - just the paper return processing operations. Close to 90% of tax returns are electronically filed now and that is the reason for the down-sizing...
