Texas City school district plans to absorb La Marque ISD
GALVESTON – The La Marque school district will be absorbed by the neighboring Texas City school district, a Texas City ISD spokeswoman said Wednesday.
La Marque's annexation by its neighbor is part of a plan by the Texas Education Agency to disband that school district as of July 1, after it failed to meet financial and academic accountability goals.
"We respect the Commissioner's decision and we are prepared to move forward with the annexation process in a way that benefits both communities and all students," Texas City Superintendent Cynthia Lusignolo said in a statement posted on the school district web site.
Texas City ISD spokeswoman Melissa Tortorici said that it was too early to know what kind of impact the absorption of La Marque schools would have on her district. La Marque is about five miles west of Texas City.
