Ocelot deaths lead to new roadside warnings



RAYMONDVILLE — New roadside signs warn motorists to slow down for ocelots.

The deaths of two ocelots along Highway 186 led Willacy County to request the Texas Department of Transportation to install two signs warning of “wildlife crossing” on a 2-mile stretch near Bait Bridge.

“It is imperative we take the loss of the ocelot habitat as a serious issue,” Willacy County Judge Aurelio Guerra said of the endangered species. “We must raise awareness of motorists traveling on all wildlife corridors.”

On June 8, a vehicle killed a female ocelot on Highway 186. The ocelot had been studied since the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute’s remote camera identified the wild cat in 2011, according to the institute’s East Foundation on the El Sauz Ranch.
