UT recommends moving Confederate statues
AUSTIN - The University of Texas at Austin's handful of Confederate statues should be altered or relocated from the main mall to a museum or an exhibit elsewhere on campus, according to a task force convened to decide the future of the divisive monuments.
The 12-member task force, which included students, faculty and alumni, issued a series of recommendations in a 34-page report Monday. While the proposals varied, four of the five options recommended removing one or all of the monuments and remembrances to the Confederacy.
"The task force consulted on a great many options for the statues, combining its own thoughts with those compiled from public input and discussion with experts across campus," the report noted. "There was broad consensus that doing nothing was not a viable option."
New UT-Austin President Greg Fenves will make the ultimate decision on which recommendation to choose.
