Natural gas pipeline ruptures near Falfurrias

A natural gas pipeline ruptured Monday evening east of Falfurrias, prompting officials to evacuate homes on the northern side of town.

Brooks County sheriff's deputies and other local agencies responded to the gas pipeline rupture east of Ranch Road 1418 near State Highway 285 about 8:30 p.m. Monday, said Chief Deputy Benny Martinez.

No injuries have been reported and the gas has not ignited, Martinez said, but officials at the scene said gas could be heard hissing from the pipeline. He said the evacuations were prompted due to fears prevailing winds could carry the gas over residences, possibly igniting or causing illness.

Traffic along part of Highway 285 has been redirected to Farm-to-Market Road 2191 to avoid the area of the gas leak.
