Bexar County Commissioners order removal of Confederate symbols

SAN ANTONIO — Bexar County Commissioners Court voted today to remove two Confederate markers with flag emblems from county property.

County Judge Nelson Wolff said "we're simply not going to glorify a symbol of hate."

The markers that will be removed date from 1936 and 1956. The older tribute marks San Antonio as part of the Jefferson Davis Memorial Highway and comprises two plaques – one with a Confederate flag. The newer tribute, with two Confederate flags, marks the site of the Vance House on West Nueva Street at Main, a home frequented by Robert E. Lee before the Civil War.

The markers will be replaced with two others – one a tribute to the nine governments of Bexar County since 1718, the other honoring Ricardo Rodriguez, plaintiff in a landmark 1897 federal court case that granted citizenship rights to Mexican immigrants.
