Children at Dilley immigration detention center get adult dose of vaccine
Two hundred and fifty children held in the immigrant family detention center in Dilley received adult doses of the hepatitis A vaccine earlier this week, officials said Friday night.
None were hospitalized, said a spokesman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
While no significant adverse reactions are expected, health care professionals will continue to monitor the children for any side effects for the next five days, said agency spokesman Richard Rocha. Parents at the facility were advised and counseled by medical professionals about potential side effects, with services made available in multiple languages.
About 2,000 women and children, most of them from Central America, are being held in the Dilley detention center that opened in December. Opponents of family detention have accused ICE of mistreating detainees and said even the best conditions are detrimental to children. Most are asylum seekers, activists have said.
