SeaWorld San Antonio welcomed a female beluga calf born to their beluga whale family at 12:44 a.m., Saturday, June 20.
Visitors to SeaWorld San Antonio today got a huge 120-pound treat when they got to see the park's newest addition, a female beluga calf born Saturday morning at 12:44 a.m.
The unnamed calf was about 4-feet long and was born to beluga parents Martha and Imaq. There is no name for the little swimmer yet, but park officials say the calf has been observed nursing, which is a strong sign she will survive.
In a news release, Chris Bellows, SeaWorld San Antonio's vice president of zoological operations, noted how these first hours in the life of whales can be a bit tense.
"The first days and even weeks in the life of a cetacean (dolphin or whale) are critical, but everything we've witnessed about this birth gives us great optimism that this animal will thrive," he said.
