LeTourneau University alumni, supporters call for policy reversal regarding same-sex relationships
LONGVIEW, TEXAS -- Some LeTourneau University alumni and their parents are criticizing a change in the student-athlete handbook dealing with same-sex relationships, saying the policy prohibits their freedom of speech.
The handbook change prohibits "same-sex dating behaviors" and public advocacy of "sex outside of a biblically defined marriage."
Jonathan Wilson, a 2006 graduate, said he first learned about the issue after a friend shared an article from pro-LGBT website Outsports. He said other current and former LETU students also started sharing articles on social media, and word quickly spread among the LeTourneau community.
LeTourneau University spokeswoman Janet Ragland said the school's Christian mission is rooted in biblical principles "and is the foundation of policies that apply equally to all students."
